Samuel had arranged a marriage for his daughter with the son of a business partner as part of a business agreement.
Penelope was horrified and shocked when she found out what her father had done.
She refused to have any part of it.
She told him she was not going to marry somebody she did not love.
He threatened to cut her off and throw her out into the world with nothing.
After her privileged upbringing she did not know how to survive in the real world without her father's money so she had no choice but to back down and do what he said.
